Belgian D'Uccle / Belgian Bantam / Mille Fleur (True Bantam)

Belgian Bantam (Mille Fleur) Rooster

Belgian D'Uccles (also known as Belgian Bantams, Belgian Bearded D'Uccles, Belgian Bearded Bantams, and Mille Fleurs) originated in the town of Uccle, just outside Brussels, Belgium. Belgian Bantams are considered True Bantams (chickens that are one fourth to one third the size of regular chickens) because they do not have a large counterpart. To learn more about Bantams, click here. The Begian D'Uccle breed has several varities, with the speckled Mille Fleurs (pictured above) being the most common. The other varieties include: Porcelain, Black, Buff, White, Blue, and Golden Neck. These Bantams are characterized by their beard and their beautiful feathered feet and legs. The Belgian D'Uccle hen makes a wonderful brooder and mother and lays very small white eggs (it takes two to three Bantam eggs to equal one regular chicken egg). Belgian D'Uccles have a very mild temperament and are quite friendly (the roosters are rarely aggressive) and make an excellent chicken for children to raise. This breed is generally hardy, but does not always do well in wet, muddy conditions because of the feathered feet.

Welsummers (Welsumers) were developed in Holland in the early 1900's. Welsummers have an interesting origin, being bred from a combination of the following chicken breeds: Rhode Island Red, Barnevelder, Leghorn, Cochin, and Wyandotte. The Welsummer rooster has the "classic" cockerel look and was used as the model for the Kellogg's Cornflakes rooster. Welsummer chickens are very hardy, especially in cold weather and, though energetic, are friendly. Welsummers have recently gained in popularity for backyard flock enthusiasts because of their beautiful dark brown, terracotta colored eggs, which are large in size. Welsummer chickens also have a bantam (miniature) counterpart, but please note that the bantam Welsummer does not lay dark brown eggs, but small light brown eggs.

Polish (Poland) chickens were actually first developed several hundred years ago in Holland. Originally bred for their eggs, now Polish chickens are primarily show birds because of their beautiful and unique plummage, especially their fantastic, hat-like or punk hair-like crests. Polish chickens are available in a wide variety of colors: red, buff, blue, brown laced, silver laced, black, splash, white, and marbled. Polish chickens are very docile and friendly and lay small white eggs. Because of their ornamental feathers, Polish chickens may have difficulty in extremely cold, stormy, wet, or muddy conditions and may sometimes require a crest "haircut" if the feathers begin to block their vision. Polish Crested chickens also have a bantam (miniature) counterpart.

Faverolles were developed in France in the early 1800's. Although rare, Faverolles are enjoying an increased popularity among backyard flock owners. The most popular type of this chicken breed is the Salmon Faverolle. The Faverolle (Faverolles) rooster is straw, black and reddish colored, while the Faverolle hen has creamy white and salmon colored feathers. Faverolles are hardy in both the heat and cold, and are very docile and friendly. Faverolles lay medium sized off-white to creamy tinted eggs. Faverolles also have a bantam (miniature) counterpart.

Campine chickens are an ancient breed, but were specifically bred in Belgium in the 1800's. Campines come in two primary varieties: Golden Campines and Silver Campines. Campines are entertaining due to their inquisitive nature and in general, are friendly, but some Campines can be flighty and nervous. Campines tend to be hardy, but their combs can be subject to frostbite. Both Golden Campines and Silver Campines lay medium sized white eggs. Campines also have a bantam (miniature) counterpart.

Dorkings are an ancient breed, perhaps having been introduced into England by the Romans. The most common color for Dorkings is silver gray (grey), but white, red, and a colored variety also exist. Dorkings tend to be delicate and aren't always hardy, especially in heat, but do well in cooler climates. Dorking chickens are very docile and friendly and lay medium size white eggs. Dorkings also have a bantam (miniature) counterpart.

Araucana chickens are thought to have originated in Chile. Araucanas come in a variety of colors: black, silver, white, red, blue, buff and more recently, lavender. Araucanas tend to be friendly and calm and are well adapted to both the heat and the cold. Araucanas lay small blue eggs, and are often confused with Ameraucanas (Ameraucana / Easter Egger). Ameraucanas lay medium to large size blue and green tinted eggs, whereas Araucanas only lay small blue eggs. Araucanas also have a bantam (miniature) counterpart.

Barnevelder chickens are a Dutch breed, developed in Holland in the late 1800's. Barnevelders have beautiful plummage, with the most common color being brown double laced, but white, black and blue varieties have also been developed. Barnevelder chickens are generally hardy, except in very cold climates. Barnevelders do well in warm and even damp conditions.
Barnevelders have an extremely mild and friendly temperament and make wonderful additions to a backyard flock and are a great choice for children to raise. The Barnevelder breed is especially known for its dark, reddish brown eggs, which are usually quite large in size.

New Hampshire Red Chickens (or simply New Hampshires) were developed from the Rhode Island Red in the early 1900's to intensify the characteristics of the Rhode Island Red in terms of hardiness, egg production, and early maturation. New Hampshire Reds are a lighter shade of red than the Rhode Island Red and like the Rhode Island Red, the New Hampshires are very interactive with people and can be extremely friendly and calm or can occasionally turn aggressive, especially the roosters. New Hampshire Reds are very hardy and tolerate heat and cold well. New Hampshires are fantastic egg producers and lay large size brown eggs. New Hampshires also have a bantam (miniature) counterpart.

Jersey Giant chickens are aptly named as many of them reach 10 pounds or more. Developed in New Jersey in the mid 1800's, the Jersey Giant is the largest chicken breed in the world. Jersey Giants are predominently black, but also can be white, and more recently, a blue Jersey Giant has been developed. Jersey Giants are extremely hardy birds and do well in cold climates. Jersey Giants do tend to eat a lot of feed and may not be the most economical chicken to own, but they are nevertheless, great backyard flock birds because of their kind and gentle temperament. The friendly personality of the Jersey Giant makes this breed an excellent choice for children who want to raise chickens. Jersey Giants lay medium to large size brown eggs and make great mothers / brooders. As strange as this sounds, Jersey Giants also have a bantam (miniature) counterpart.

Delaware chickens were developed in the state of Delaware in the mid 1900's. They are white in color with a few black speckles and are well adapted to both the heat and the cold. Delaware chickens are quite calm and friendly birds and make excellent backyard flock members. Delawares are wonderful producers of large eggs, medium to dark brown in color. Delawares also have a bantam (miniature) counterpart.

Cochin chickens come in a variety of colors: white, black, blue, silver-laced, with buff being the most common. Cochins also have a bantam (miniature) counterpart. Cochins are popular as show birds because of their beautiful plummage, which covers their legs and feet. Extremely docile and friendly, Cochins are an ideal backyard flock choice, especially for children who want to raise chickens. Cochins lay small to medium size brown eggs. Cochins were originally bred in China and are hardy in both warm and cold climates, but because of their leg and feet feathers, they do not do well in extremely rainy and/or muddy conditions. The Frizzle Cochin is bred for its mutant feathers, which point outward instead of laying flat against the body. See Frizzles for a more detailed explanation of this variety of chicken. Cochins also make excellent mothers and will brood easily.

Silkies come in a variety of colors: White Silkies, Blue Silkies, Gray (Grey) Silkies, Buff Silkies, Black Silkies, and Red Silkies. Silkies are an ancient breed, dating at least from 13th century China. This chicken breed is hardy and is suited for both cold and hot climates, but may not do well in extremely stormy weather because of its plummage. Silkies are very docile and friendly and make wonderful birds for a backyard flock and are an excellent choice for children to raise. Silkies lay small eggs that are usually cream to very light brown in color. It takes roughly two to three Silkie eggs to equal one regular chicken egg. Silkies also have a bantam (miniature) counterpart.
