Light Sussex Hen
Developed 200 years ago in England, the Sussex breed comes in several varities: Speckled, Light, Buff, Red, and Silver. These chickens are extremely hardy and adapt well to very cold climates. They are quite friendly, calm, and gentle and do not mind being held. Like the kind tempered Buff Orpington, Sussex chickens are a great breed for children to raise. Sussex chickens are a wonderful addition to a backyard flock with their tremendous egg productivity, laying eggs that are off-white to light brown in color and medium to large in size. Recently there has been an olive green colored egg developed in Light Sussex breeds, but these green egg layers are still quite rare. Sussex chickens also have a bantam (miniature) counterpart.
