The Penedesenca breed is originally from a much older breed that was developed in Catalonia, Spain. Varieties of Penedesenca include Creole, Partridge, Wheaton, and Black. Though fairly common in Central and South America, Penedesencas have only recently been available in North America. Penedesenca chickens are becoming popular for backyard flocks because the hens produce a huge amount of eggs, which are a very dark reddish brown. Penedesenca pullets (hens under one year of age) lay eggs that are almost black, but lighten to a very dark brown once the hens are over a year old. Penedesenca eggs are small to medium in size. These chickens are quite hardy, especially in very hot climates and tend to be flighty, avoiding most contact with humans. Penedesencas do not have a Bantam counterpart.

Sebright chickens are named after Sir John Sebright, who developed this bird after nearly 30 years of selective breeding in the early 1800's in England. Sir John Sebright wanted to create an ornamental chicken with very specific size and plummage. Sebrights are "true bantams" which means they are one fourth the size of standard chickens and have no large counterpart. For more information, please see Bantams. There are two varieties of Sebrights: golden and silver. Both Golden Sebrights and Silver Sebrights lay tiny white eggs and are somewhat skittish and nervous in temperament. When Sebrights reach adulthood they are generally hardy, but the chicks tend to have a higher than average mortality rate. Sebright roosters are "hen feathered" which means that they lack the usual large sickle feathers characteristic of most roosters. Due to their small size and large wings, many Sebrights can fly fairly high, and thus should be kept in a pen with a roof or top netting.

Campine chickens are an ancient breed, but were specifically bred in Belgium in the 1800's. Campines come in two primary varieties: Golden Campines and Silver Campines. Campines are entertaining due to their inquisitive nature and in general, are friendly, but some Campines can be flighty and nervous. Campines tend to be hardy, but their combs can be subject to frostbite. Both Golden Campines and Silver Campines lay medium sized white eggs. Campines also have a bantam (miniature) counterpart.

Andalusian chickens were developed in the mid 1800's in Spain. Andalusians come in three varieties: Blue, Black, and White. Andalusian chickens are generally hardy and can tolerate heat well, but in very cold weather, their combs are subject to frostbite. In terms of temperament, Andalusians are active, flighty, and nervous and do not seek much human contact. Andalusians lay large white eggs. Andalusians also have a bantam (miniature) counterpart.

Ancona chickens were developed in the mid 1800's near the city of Ancona, Italy and are black with white speckles. Ancona chickens tend to be hardy especially in the cold, but can occasionally suffer frostbite on their large combs. Ancona chickens lay a good amount of small white eggs, but are rather nervous and flighty, and tend to shy away from a lot of human contact. Anconas are great foragers. Anconas also have a bantam (miniature) counterpart.

Marans are a French chicken breed developed only recently for their beautiful dark brown eggs. Maran chickens are generally hardy, and their temperament ranges from calm to very active. The most popular strain, the Cuckoo Maran, makes a wonderful addition to backyard flocks and their eggs are a must for anyone who wants to collect breeds who lay a variety of colored eggs.

Leghorn chickens come in a wide variety of colors: dark brown, buff, silver, black, red, with white being the most popular. These chickens lay huge amounts of white eggs that are medium to large in size. Although they can be shy and nervous, these birds are incredible egg producers and are hardy, though their large combs can be subject to frostbite in very cold climates. Leghorns also have a bantam (miniature) counterpart.
